I have always found that a Picturehouse Cinema attractsa really pleasant group of people. They are in fact somewhat more than a cinema because they provide talking shops on many cultural subjects. They also create a very clubby atmosphere in their associated bars and restaurants. It would be a fantastic addition to Crystal Palace. I currently use the Greenwich based Picturehouse. The church by comparison would compete with many others in the community and offer nothing new to the local constituency.

I beleive making the Gala into a church will degenerate the area with increase in traffic parking and pollution without any commerce takeing place in local buineses. Where as a cinema is a community venue for loals and surrounding areas increaseing commerce thereby regenerateing and also creatingting employment.

A church is not inclusive to the wider community. What in hell is wrong with culture?

Churches are for small minority groups rather than the comminity – and we don’t need anymore religion in the world.
Cinemas are for everyone – build a cinema!

A new church we don’t need. A cinema would help the area’s regeneration

I am concerned about this potential loss of leisure allocation within the Crystal Palace community, brought to my attention not through any consultation by KICC but through the actions of a local resident action group called the Picture Palace Campaign, which hopes to restore the building to cinema use. There has been little or no pre-application consultation by KICC on the application or its plans to accommodate the increased traffic and parking congestion that could be caused. These are all key concerns, and explain the substantial opposition from local traders, who are concerned about the effect of customer access on one of their main trading days.

Having read the KICC planning application they predict an estimated 1800 attending servies weekly, with 800 on a sunday. I think this is conservative and will be considerably more. The church is the main south London branch and is increasingly growing in size. These numbers will grow. As it is the main church for south London people with be travelling from all over and so not have a vested interest in using the local shops, restaurants and facilities.

A cinema is wanted by the locals who DO care about crystal palace and want to see their local community thrive by using the shops, restaurants and bars when they head out to see a film. We want a cinema because we care about the future of Crystal Palace.
