Bromley Council reject Crystal Palace cinema conversion plans

CONTROVERSIAL plans to turn a former cinema in Crystal Palace into a church have been rejected by a Bromley council planning committee – on the chairman’s casting vote.

Kingsway International Christian Centre had wanted to turn the former cinema and bingo hall in Church Road into a church after buying the building from Gala bingo hall. The move has sparked a massive groundswell of public opposition from residents and traders – the vast majority of whom want the building turned back into a cinema.

But the future of the building could now be uncertain after a letter from KICC’s agents for the application stated that if planning permission was not forthcoming the building would just be allowed to fall into disrepair. Continue reading »

Address to Bromley Committee

Good evening Chair and Members of the Committee

My name is Annabel Sidney – I am the Chair of the Crystal Palace Triangle Planning Group and the Picture Palace Cinema Campaign.

May I thank the Chair for giving me the opportunity to speak.

I would begin by respectfully reminding the committee that just because the applicant has spent £1.25 million pounds, at risk, on a building without the correct planning permission, the committee should not feel under any pressure to approve.

The applicant repeatedly describes 25 Church Road as tired, redundant and inactive. We would point out that the building was in active use for commercial purposes until its purchase by the applicant in June this year. Continue reading »

A Worrying Tale

Little White Lies reports on a remarkably similar campaign in Walthamstow where local campaigners are fighting to save the EMD Cinema.

Sadly it appears that the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God have allowed the cinema to fall into serious disrepair since their planning application was rejected.  We can only hope that Kingsway International Christian Centre will be more community minded if their application is declined by Bromley.
