I've lived in Crystal Palace for last 10 years now and have certainly seen an improvement in the opening of
new shops, bars and restaurants to the area. However its been a long time coming and there is still a lot to do to encourage new business to the area. With this in mind i believe the reopening of our Cinema would galvanise the community into action putting Crystal Palace back on the map, bringing much needed prosperity to the area. This would also tie in well with the new east london line extension which is planned for next year!

This is just what the triangle needs. All we have is pubs and restaurants and it would be great to have some evening entertainment other than bingo (not my thing!).

I am appalled by KICCs cynical attitude to leave the cinema site empty. How dare they decide what the community wants without canvassing the community. Will KICC guarantee that they will run and welcome gay, bi-sexual and transgender groups, film clubs, yoga classes, tai-chi classes, or any other community needs which a mapping exercise might highlight. Of course a community would welcome a church that really answers the needs of a community. You only have to look at Parchmore Methodist Church in Thornton Heath to see how effectively this can be done and to see Christian teaching in practice. But sadly KICCs narrow and extreme attitudes are well documented. And this is clearly being demonstrated by their current threatening behaviour.

If the site has to remain empty then so be it. At least the community will not have to tolerate traffic jams and parking twice a day on Sunday!

No-one should have the right to knowingly allow a building to fall into disrepair. The threat by this organisation clearly highlights their blatant disregard for the feelings of crystal palace residents and their intentions should be made as widely known as possible to hold up a mirror to the true character of the leaders of this organisation. If the council are aware of the KICC's intentions to go ahead and create a rotting eyesore in the middle of a vibrant community they should take the necessary action against them and force them to keep the building a good state of repair, the cost of doing this would in turn force them to abandon their plans to create a church on this site.

One only has to look at the huge problems hospitals face with parking when they are located in urban areas to know that opening a church in the middle of a town with no parking facilities will lead to congestion and tensions.
The best alternative for this organisation would be to find a more suitable site and recognise that their plans are not relevant to the needs of the "local" community and therefore should be abandoned and the building sold on to be used for the purpose it was orginally built - a cinema.

Reading the guardian on saturday there was a large piece on Michael Moore who was behind the opening of a cinema in Traverse City which had been in decline for many years. The cinema was fundamental to their urban regeneration. Here's a sample from the piece:

"When I first got here the theatre was boarded up," says Moore. "It was a mess. I said, look, let me reopen this theatre, I'll create a non-profit. It has brought, like, half a million people downtown in the first two years. If they're downtown they go out to dinner, they go to the bookstore. It livens everything up. Stores open. Now there's no plywood on any windows." This, says Moore, has made him something of a local hero even in a town that votes Republican.

Notting Hill, Brixton and Clapham have shown that pictures houses can be run very successfully. if Crystal Palace is lucky enough to have such a historic building, it can be made to work too and will undoubtedly be a great asset to the area.

Why don't the Council serve a Notice of Disrepair on KICC, that should negate their blackmail threat of letting the building go to rack and ruin (very charitable by the way!). It is in a Conservation Area after all.
